reclaim(ed) living

A house for a musician and a food ecologist.  The first decision was to stick with the existing house and its present modest footprint.  To fit jam space for a seven-piece band, all the original downstairs walls were removed, then a big window was opened to the south garden. the kitchen back wall conceals the stair behind, and the island in turn shields the working kitchen from the rest of the living space.

Working together with great local contractors Full Cycle Builders, we developed a palette of flush wood planking, salvaged old barn boards, some then whitewashed, others clear resin-sealed, as well as contemporary white lacquer, subway tile and a re-sanded maple floor.
